California Great American Main Street Award® Winners
Each year, the National Trust Main Street Center recognizes exceptional Main Street communities whose successes serve as a model for comprehensive commercial district revitalization. These award-winning communities have demonstrated proven success in using the Main Street Four Point Approach® to create economic vitality, a unique sense of place, and a strong commitment to the community by all stakeholders.
Winners are selected from a nationwide pool of applicants by a national jury based on successful and innovative uses of the Main Street Four Point Approach®. Winners are honored at an awards ceremony during the National Main Streets Conference and receive a bronze plaque and a certificate marking their achievement.
Six of the Great American Main Street Award® Winners have been from California - the second most award winners from any state. Five of these winners are current California Main Street Designated Communities.
Eight Guiding Principles
These are the eight guiding principles of the Main Street Approach ®
1. Comprehensive A single project cannot revitalize a neighborhood business district. An ongoing series of initiatives is vital to build community support and create lasting progress.
2. Incremental Small projects make a big difference. They demonstrate that "things are happening" on Main Street and hone the skills and confidence the program's stakeholders will need to tackle more complex projects.
3. Self-Help The District can provide valuable direction and technical assistance, but only local leadership can breed long-term success by fostering and demonstrating community involvement and commitment to the revitalization effort.
4. Public/Private Partnership Every local Main Street program needs the support and expertise of both the public and private sectors. For an effective partnership, each must recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the other.
5. Identifying and Capitalizing on Existing Assets Unique offerings and local assets provide the solid foundation for a successful Main Street initiative.
6. Quality From storefront design to promotional campaigns to special events, quality must be instilled in the organization.
7. Change Changing community attitudes and habits are essential to bring about a commercial district renaissance. A carefully planned Main Street program will help shift public perceptions and practices to support and sustain the revitalization process.
8. Action Oriented Frequent visible changes in the look and activities of the commercial district will reinforce the perception of positive change. Small, but dramatic improvements early in the process will remind the community that the revitalization effort is underway.
History Of CA Program
Focused on enhancing the economic, social, cultural, and environmental well-being of historic and traditional commercial districts located in California's diverse cities, towns, and neighborhoods, California Main Street has helped communities build strong broad-based organizations to implement and manage the revitalization process. From 1986 to 2002, the California Main Street Program was administered by the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency and supported by State General Funds.
Four Point Approach®
The Main Street Four Point Approach® is a philosophy, a program, and a proven comprehensive approach to commercial revitalization of neighborhood business districts. This approach has been implemented in more than 2,000 cities and towns across the nation with the help of statewide neighborhood business district revitalization programs and the National Main Street Center at the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

California Main Street Alliance advocates on behalf of its membership on the state and national level. Partners for advocacy include the National Main Street Center, National Trust for Historic Preservation, California Preservation Foundation and others.
We track legislation on the state level that affect cities, downtowns, commercial districts and their businesses, as well as legislation regarding historic preservation.
Recent advocacy efforts include lobbying against the elimination of redevelopment in California.
Designated Community Process
California Main Street's Designated Community application requirements are designed to identify communities that will work effectively to revitalize their downtown and/or neighborhood commercial district. A desire to provide the greatest social, community and economic returns consistent with long-standing Main Street "guiding principles" and practices guide California Main Street's policies and criteria.
Application for Membership with California Main Street Alliance
Membership in California Main Street Alliance (CAMSA) is open to any person, business, organization or public entity that is interested in the revitilization of downtowns and commercial districts in California.
Associate Members are open to any person or organization interested in the mission of CAMSA, including communities who may wish to apply to become a California Designated Main Street Community in the future by completing the certification process. Annual membership dues are $250.

The mission of the California Main Street Alliance (CAMSA) is to advocate for and provide technical assistance to California's historic commercial districts, traditional neighborhood commercial districts and downtowns. We serve as the primary non-profit advocate for the principles and ideals of California Main Street, a program that strives to enhance the economic, social, cultural, and environmental well being of California's historic and traditional downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts.
CAMSA offers education and other assistance to its members on behalf of the State of California's California Main Street program to California Main Street Designated and Aspiring communities that practice and sustain the Main Street Four Point Approach® to revitalization.
